Best Times to Visit Asia by Region

A region-by-region guide to Asia's seasons: East Asia's spring and autumn, South-East Asia's dry seasons and monsoons, South Asia's winter, and Central Asia's shoulder seasons.

Short answer

There's no single best time for all of Asia. East Asia is most pleasant in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Mainland South-East Asia is most comfortable in the cool dry season (roughly November–February). North and central India is best from October to March. Central Asia shines in spring and early autumn.

Key points

  • Spring and autumn are the sweet spots in East and Central Asia.
  • Mainland South-East Asia's cool dry season runs roughly November–February.
  • Monsoon timing differs between coasts — check your exact destination.
  • Public holidays can matter as much as weather.

Asia spans tropical islands, high deserts and snowy mountains, so there's no single "best season". Here's how timing works region by region.

At a glance

Region Most comfortable Watch out for
Japan, South Korea Mar–May, Sep–Nov Rainy season (June–July), humid summer, crowds in Golden Week and cherry blossom
China (east) Apr–May, Sep–Oct Hot humid summers, national holiday crowds
Mainland South-East Asia Nov–Feb Hot season (Mar–May), monsoon (roughly May/June–Oct)
Indonesia (Bali, Java) Apr–Oct (dry) Wet season Nov–Mar
Philippines Dec–May Typhoon season (roughly Jul–Oct)
North and central India Oct–Mar Extreme heat (Apr–Jun), monsoon (Jun–Sep)
Nepal (trekking) Oct–Nov, Mar–May Monsoon cloud and leeches (Jun–Sep)
Central Asia Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct Very hot summers in the deserts, cold winters

East Asia

Spring brings cherry blossoms in Japan and Korea; autumn brings clear skies and red leaves. Both are busy. Summer is hot and humid, with a rainy season in early summer. Winter is cold but good for skiing and has the clearest skies.

South-East Asia

The mainland — Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar — has a cool, dry season roughly from November to February, a hot season from about March to May and a rainy season after that. Coasts differ: Thailand's Gulf islands and Vietnam's central coast have rainy seasons later in the year than the west coast. Check your exact destination.

South Asia

For most of India, October to March is the most comfortable time. The south and Sri Lanka have more complex patterns, with different coasts affected by different monsoons. The Himalaya has its own trekking seasons.

Central Asia

Spring (April to June) brings green valleys and mild cities; early autumn (September and October) brings harvest markets and clear mountain views. Summer is very hot in the deserts but good for high mountains.

Don't forget holidays

Lunar New Year, Japan's Golden Week, China's National Day week and Eid can mean full trains, higher prices and closures. Sometimes they're worth planning around, sometimes worth joining.

Questions readers ask

Is it a bad idea to travel during the rainy season?

Not necessarily. Rain often comes in short, heavy bursts, prices are lower and crowds thinner. But some islands, treks and boat routes close, and flooding can disrupt travel.

When is typhoon season?

In the western Pacific, typhoons are most common roughly from July to October, affecting the Philippines, Taiwan, southern China, Japan and Vietnam's coast.
